About the Kivan Club

The Kivan Boys and Girls Club is located in Mt. Pleasant (East Vancouver). Kivan was the first Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Vancouver, opening its doors in 1936. The original Kivan club was founded by the Kiwanis Club, who convinced the City of Vancouver Council to turn over an old fire hall located at 12th Avenue and St. Catherine's Street. Ironically the old fire hall burnt down in the late 70s; however, after assessing the need for a club in the Mt. Pleasant Area, the directors of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Vancouver received funding to construct a new site located across from Robson Park. Kivan opened its doors once again in 1979.

The Kivan Club serves the Mount Pleasant Community in East Vancouver. Most of the members come from Nightingale Elementary School, Vancouver Technical Secondary and Sir Charles Tupper Secondary. Kivan collaborates with the Kimount Boys and Girls Club, Mt. Pleasant Community Center, Mount Pleasant Neighborhood House and The Broadway Youth Resource.

 

We believe that children and youth need support, encouragement and direction. Our goal is to provide preventative and developmental services to children, youth and their families within the Mount Pleasant community. The Kivan Boys and Girls Club is a place for friendship, informal guidance and activities for children and youth. The Club encourages the physical, educational, character and skill development of each member through recreational and social activities.

 

 

Membership is $25 per year. No child is turned away because of their inability to pay. We value and actively promote diversity to reflect the cultures of our community in our programming, membership and staff. Our intent is ensure equal opportunities for all children, youth and adults, regardless of age, race, color, gender, creed, visibility, religious belief, sexual orientation or national origin.

 

 

Volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization. There are over 1,200 individuals each year, who give of their time, skills and knowledge to help the clubs ensure that the needs of our young people are being met.
