Camp Potlatch
Ma'Kya Program
Adventure, Campfires and Dreams!
The Ma’Kya program has returned for another year, it has been an integral part of the CampPotlatch experience for youth aged 15+.It is our hope that this program will allow our oldest, leadership campers and volunteer co-counselors and staff to stay connected with the Potlatch community during the months away from camp. Over the next nine months, the program will focus on teaching wilderness outdoor skills, leadership development and will provide exciting opportunities for weekend expeditions.

The Ma’Kya program gatherings take place at various Boys and Girls Club locations.Gatherings will range from leadership games, attending local workshops, slide shows, guest speakers and other character building activities. Some gatherings will be strictly reserved as a “Pre-Trip Planning Meeting” in order for participants to discuss trip details, gear requirements and logistics.

While it is not mandatory to attend all gatherings or activities, we do ask that participants and Volunteers planning on attending a weekend trip or activity attend the “Pre-Trip Planning Meeting”.

In the past our Ma’Kya participants have had the opportunity to do the following:

· Hike the Chief in Squamish

· Mini Amazing Race and BBQ at Spanish Banks.

· Winter camping and snowshoeing at MountSeymour and ManningPark.

· Hiking and camping at ElfinLakes in GaribaldiPark.

· Guided hike/tour at Burns Bog Conservation Society.

· Workshop on backcountry gear packing at Mountain Equipment Co-op.

· Sailing in the GulfIslands

· Slide shows on world travel and/or environmental issues.

· Leadership development workshops, games, activities and presentations.

· Sea Kayaking trips out of CampPotlatch

· Work parties at CampPotlatch

The Ma’Kya Program is a great way for outdoor enthusiasts to keep their wilderness and leadership skills sharp while having fun with friends in the outdoors. This is a no fee program; however we will ask participants, volunteers and staff to assist in fundraising money for expeditions and other related activities.
